Perfect Ponies Right Track Children's Tuition

The more we learn about horses and how they think, behave, move and learn, the better horsemen we become. All too often our initial education as riders and horse owners is missing vital components.

As children, how many of us understood that a 'naughty' horse is actually communicating with us? It may be saying 'something hurts', 'I think I'm the leader, I'm not sure you know what you're doing...', 'I'm scared', 'I've got very high energy levels today'...Whatever it is telling us, we need to listen and respond. After treating or ruling out any physical problems, behavioural and ridden issues should be addressed calmly, intelligently, consistently and with an understanding of what we are doing and why. An uneducated rider is limited in their potential and in what they can achieve with their horse.

It is my belief that the best possible start for young riders is to teach them to listen to their horse, to think, to be consistent, to apply light aids and to have a balanced seat.

Lessons with Perfect Ponies Right Track aim to...

  • Teach children to think about what their horse is telling them.
  • Teach children to understand the importance of communication – what are your aids saying? When should you apply them? When should you release them?
  • Instill a balanced seat and independent hands (vital for balance, confidence and communication).
  • Promote the use of light aids – by applying them consistently and appropriately to ensure your horse stays light and responsive.
  • Create a partnership between child and pony that does not rely on whips and spurs.
  • Ensure safety first!
  • Make it fun! I teach the above principles using games, rosette schemes, rewards and imagery and visualisation techniques.

Lessons include ridden work, equine psychology and groundwork.
